International Day of People with Disability is held on 3 December each year, and is a day to promote awareness, understanding and genuine inclusion.
The City's aquatic centres are proud to provide accessible facilities and foster inclusive employment opportunities.
Recently, team members Karen and Ian, attended a special event hosted by service provider Job Support (Australia’s leader in inclusive employment) to celebrate a major milestone: 40 years of creating meaningful employment for people with intellectual disability.
During the event Cook + Phillip Park Pool and Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre were recognised for their commitment to inclusive employment and the contributions made by Karen and Ian.
Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre has partnered with Job Support for more than a decade. Ian, a highly valued team member for 10 years, shared:
“What I love most is the friendly members and staff, and how they take my advice on board. My Job Support team and supervisors have been amazing. I really value the feedback and enjoy catching up with former supervisors.”
Cook + Phillip Park Pool was also acknowledged for its dedication to creating inclusive opportunities. Karen, who has been part of the team at the centre for more than 10 years, said:
“The staff and customers are very kind and make me laugh. I like coming to work every day and want to stay for another 10 years.”
Inclusive employment is about more than providing jobs - it strengthens communities and creates workplaces where everyone is valued. We’re incredibly proud of Ian, Karen and all our team members who make inclusion meaningful every day. Together with Job Support, we’ll continue building environments where everyone can thrive.
