We’re proud to have Steph Barnes, one of the country’s most passionate and experienced aquatics leaders, at the helm of our swim school.
With over two decades of industry experience and a deep commitment to education, inclusion, and excellence, Steph is driving our swim school to be the best in Sydney.
Steph began her journey in 2001 as a swim teacher after years as a competitive squad swimmer. From day one, she found joy in helping others grow – mentoring younger swimmers at her local pool and supporting coaches in developing confident, capable athletes.
“I’ve always believed swimming is about more than just the strokes – it’s about confidence, growth, and giving everyone the chance to find enjoyment in, on and around the water,” says Steph.
Her career has been filled with powerful moments, none more so than supporting Chip, a young man with Down syndrome, on his path to becoming Australia's first qualified Swim Instructor with Down Syndrome. After earning multiple gold medals at the Down Syndrome Games, Chip – with Steph’s guidance and support from Austswim – became swim instructor of the year at the 2024 NSW Aquatic and Recreation Institute (ARI) awards. A testament to the positive impact of inclusive, supportive teaching.

Steph’s impact doesn’t stop there. From helping a young girl with paraplegia swim independently for the first time to mentoring students who’ve gone on to become instructors themselves, she brings care, skill, and leadership to everything she does.
“We’re not just teaching swimming – we’re changing lives. And that’s only possible when you invest in people, train well, and lead with purpose,” Steph explains.
Under Steph’s leadership, the City of Sydney's swim school continues to evolve through investing in high-quality, in-house training and mentoring programs, to ensure every instructor is supported, skilled, and inspired.
“I’m incredibly proud of our team – they care deeply, work hard, and are always learning. That’s what makes our swim school stand out,” she says. "We don’t just employ swim teachers – we employ the best and help them become even better."
To combat the post-COVID decline in Learn to Swim and carnival participation, Steph has introduced innovative initiatives like the new Targeted Skills Clinics, 30 to 60-minute sessions designed to sharpen stroke technique and boost confidence.
“I am excited to announce that later this year, we’ll be launching our Race Ready programs to help students build confidence and prepare for their school carnivals.” she says.
Outside of work, Steph’s passion for sport continues at home. Her daughter recently competed at the Age Nationals Swimming Championships in Brisbane, her youngest represented at the Junior State Championships, and her son brought home a bronze medal in long jump from the State Athletics Championships – a family living and breathing the benefits of active lifestyles.
With Steph’s passion, leadership, and dedication to excellence, the City of Sydney Swim School is poised to reach new heights. We’re proud to lead the way in swim education, fostering a safe and inclusive environment where every swimmer can grow and succeed.
