Swimming is a skill for life. Like any skill, it develops over time with consistency, guidance and practice.
It can be tempting to enrol your child in lessons for a short period, then take a break once they become comfortable in the water. However continued participation in Learn to Swim helps children build on their skills, stay safe and become more capable swimmers.
Progress happens step by step
Our Learn to Swim program is designed as a structured pathway. Each level builds on the one before, introducing new skills, techniques and water safety knowledge.
For example, while early levels such as our infants levels (from 3 months to 3 years) focus on water confidence and basic movement, later levels including preschool and primary levels (3 to 5+ years) develop:
Strong stroke technique
Breathing control
Endurance and coordination
Safe and independent swimming
With multiple levels across each age group, progression is key to ongoing development. Moving through each level helps ensure skills are reinforced and extended over time.

Track your child's progress
To support your child’s learning, we've introduced the Student Skill Assessment tracker in the .
This tracker shows the key skills for your child’s swim level and how they are progressing with each one. Each skill is rated as:
Working towards
Almost there
Completed
Your child’s swim teacher updates these ratings during assessments. This means you can check progress at any time and see how your child is developing over their swim journey. The tracker also shows the date each skill was updated.
You can click on any skill to read a full description and see which teacher completed the assessment.
Watch the steps below on how to access the Student Skill Assessment tracker in your online portal.
If you have more than one child enrolled in the Learn to Swim program, each child will have their own assessment tracker.
From your online portal homepage, select your child’s name to view their individual progress and skill ratings.
Staying up to date with your child’s progress helps you support their learning and celebrate each milestone along the way. Regularly checking the tracker keeps you informed, so you can encourage their development, build confidence in the water, and help them move safely through each stage of their swim journey.
