At our aquatic and fitness centres, we believe that swimming should be accessible to everyone - regardless of background, ability, or support needs.
That’s why we’re proud to offer Swim Champs - a specialised swim program for children and teens under 18 with additional needs, including neurodivergence, disability, or impairment.
We're also thrilled to share that Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre was named a finalist in the Aquatic and Recreation Institute (ARI) Awards (October 2025), with Swim Champs recognised as an outstanding example of inclusive programming.
What is Swim Champs?
Swim Champs offers tailored one-on-one swimming lessons in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. Our dedicated instructors work closely with each student to build confidence, improve water safety, and develop a lifelong love of swimming.
Available at , and , Swim Champs is making a real difference in the lives of families.
Why families choose Swim Champs
This program is the unicorn you’ve been looking for if you’re parenting a neurodivergent child.
Parents of Swim Champs participants tell us that it’s not just the program, it’s the people that make the difference.
Mel and Kim, whose daughter Tasi attends the program at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, shared how meaningful it was to finally find a swim school that worked for their family. “We’d tried other swim schools, but Tasi still struggled. When we explained to the receptionist that she’s autistic, they suggested we speak with Scarlett (Wet Deck Assistant). Scarlett really listened and told us about Swim Champs-it’s been a game-changer.”
What stood out most to Mel and Kim was the empathy and support shown from the very beginning.
“Scarlett was intuitive, neuro-affirming, and incredibly patient with Tasi. The whole team made us feel heard and supported,” they said.
Another parent, whose son rejoined swimming at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre after a brain injury, shared a similar story of growth:
“I thought it might be too hard for him to get back into swimming as he used to be so strong in the water. But with the instructors’ support, he now looks forward to each session and pushes himself. He’s even swimming full laps using the muscles in his weaker leg more than ever before.”
He also noted the physical and emotional benefits:
“Swimming is helping with his balance and mobility, and it’s become a vital part of his rehab schedule. The water offers gentle exercise, which is so important, especially for kids who can’t easily run or ride bikes. Instructor Isobel has been amazing-supportive, patient, and always making the lessons fun and productive.”
Mel and Kim echoed that sentiment:
“This program is the unicorn you’ve been looking for if you’re parenting a neurodivergent child. The 1:1 lessons are priceless - it’s such an essential life skill. Tasi loves it, and she adores her instructor, Isobel. Izzy uses a visual communication card on the kickboard so Tasi can point to how she’s feeling if she’s non-verbal or struggling to process instructions. It’s that level of care that sets Swim Champs apart.”
Meet Isobel - Swim Champs instructor
Isobel is one of the passionate instructors behind Swim Champs' success. Inspired by her mum, who worked in special education, Izzy brings empathy, patience, and insight to every lesson.
What drew you to the instructor role for Swim Champs program?
Isobel: "I'm currently studying to become a social worker, so being part of Swim Champs aligns closely with the work I hope to do in the future. I'm also diagnosed with ADHD, which helps me connect with my students - I understand how challenging it can be to learn new skills or adapt to unfamiliar situations, and I always try to bring that understanding into my lessons.”
What training did you complete for this role?
I: "I completed both theory and practical training focused on inclusive teaching. Shadowing experienced Swim Champs instructors helped me build confidence and learn how to support kids with different learning styles."

What do you enjoy most about Swim Champs?
I: "The one-on-one time with each student. I get to know how they learn best, and we celebrate every milestone together. Watching their confidence grow is incredibly rewarding!"
Izzy has many memorable moments from her time as a Swim Champs but one that stands out is helping a child work through sensory challenges. “With one-on-one support and small, steady steps, they eventually learned to swim independently. Watching that transformation was truly unforgettable.”
In terms of the program benefiting students, Izzy agrees that it builds water safety skills and confidence. “I’ve seen kids go from being too nervous to enter the pool to swimming on their own – it’s amazing.”
What would you say to someone considering Swim Champs?
I: "Do it! For instructors, it's a fulfilling role that teaches you so much. For families, it's a supportive and fun way to help your child thrive."
