Learning to swim is a vital skill many Australians gain early in life. But for those arriving in a new country after a challenging journey, it can be a brave new step.
At Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, we run a weekly learn to swim class as well as aqua classes for members of the Ukrainian community - a space to build confidence, connection, and support while learning essential skills.
Following the recent recognition of Refugee Week, we spoke with Olena, Yuliia, Christina, Maryna and Liudmyla - all participants from our Ukrainian aqua classes, who shared how the program has helped them not only learn to swim, but also heal, build friendships, and reconnect with themselves.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to be in Sydney?
Olena: "I’m originally from Kyiv, Ukraine. I’m 44 years old and moved to Sydney three years ago because of the war. I’m married and have a 15-year-old daughter. Now, I’m starting over and working to rebuild my life."
Yuliia: "I’m originally from Ukraine and came to Sydney as part of my journey to find peace, safety, and new beginnings after the war turned my world upside down. It wasn’t an easy move - new country, new language, new everything - but I believe life gives you exactly what you need at the right time, and somehow, Sydney felt like a chance to breathe again."
Maryna: "I'm originally from Kharkiv, Ukraine. I came here after the war began."
Lyudmila: "I came from Ukraine to Sydney three years ago and discovered aqua aerobics classes at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre."

What was your experience with swimming or water activities back in Ukraine?
Yuliia: "Well… let’s just say I was more of a 'dry land' kind of person back in Ukraine. I only swam occasionally during summer holidays - mostly just floating around and chatting with friends. Aqua aerobics? I’d never even tried it! But I’m definitely making up for it now."
Maryna: "Back home, I used to swim in the local river from time to time, but water activities have always been something I really enjoyed."
Lyudmila: "I only went to the pool for swimming when I was back home."
Christina: "I used to visit the swimming pool from time to time in Ukraine. Once, my husband even bought me a pool membership as a Christmas present."
Being part of this community makes me feel like I belong and am supported.
How did you first hear about the swimming lessons or aqua aerobics at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre?
Olena: "I first found out about the classes through a community noticeboard. I was looking for a way to stay active, and they seemed like the perfect fit. My coach, Reka, is amazing - every lesson is well-structured, has great music, and she brings such a positive attitude."
Yuliia: "A lovely Ukrainian friend invited me. She promised me movement, laughter, and a bit of splashing around. She didn’t mention sore muscles (in the best way possible!) But I’m so glad I came - it was love at first splash!"
Christina: "Since moving to Australia, I hadn’t joined any sports classes. I just didn’t feel motivated to do much outside of looking after my family. But when I heard about the swimming lessons through the Ukrainian community, my family really encouraged me to give it a try."
What does being part of this community mean to you?
Olena: "Being part of this community makes me feel like I belong and am supported. It's great to meet others who are into the same things as me and to feel like I fit in."
Yuliia: "It means the world. Truly. It’s more than just exercise - it’s healing, it’s friendship, it’s laughter, and a sense of belonging I didn’t expect to find so far from home. Every session is like a small celebration of life, and we cheer each other on through every movement."
Maryna: "Being part of this community has meant a lot to me - it's about connecting with like-minded people, staying active, and taking care of both my physical and mental health."
Lyudmila: "I'm really glad to be part of this community - it's given me the chance to connect with friends, spend time together, and take part in all kinds of events."
Christina: "Through the classes, I’ve made new friends and meaningful connections. It’s been a great reminder of how important it is to feel part of a community."
It’s more than just exercise - it’s healing, it’s friendship, it’s laughter, and a sense of belonging I didn’t expect to find so far from home.
Have the lessons helped you/your family feel more settled or confident in Australia?
Olena: "Yes, definitely. The lessons have helped me feel more comfortable and more confident in a new place."
Yuliia: "Yes, absolutely. I feel more at home in my body and more confident walking through the world. This group gave me routine, purpose, and connection - things that are priceless when you’re starting over. Also, now I can say “core muscles” and actually know where they are!"
How has participating in these classes impacted your physical and mental wellbeing?
Olena: "I've really enjoyed the aqua aerobics classes so far – they've done wonders for my physical health and they're a great way to unwind. It's also put me in a better mood and helped me stay positive while I'm adjusting to life in a new country."
Yuliia: "Honestly, I feel stronger, lighter, and happier. Both physically and emotionally. The movement helps with stress, and the laughter is like therapy. It’s amazing how water can lift not only your body but your spirit too."
Maryna: "These classes help me feel like I’m truly living again - energised, healthy, and in good spirits. After each session, I notice real improvements in my mood and sleep, and I feel stronger and more motivated in my daily life."
Lyudmila: "Because of everything happening in Ukraine, I've been dealing with a lot of stress and worry. After a long day at work, it’s so important to relax and reset - coming to aqua class is a great way to do that. It really helps me recharge and lifts my mood."
Christina: "The swimming lessons have really improved my health. When I first started, I could barely swim half of the 50-metre pool and had trouble with my breathing. But now, after three months, I can do it with no problem - and aqua aerobics doesn’t feel nearly as hard anymore!"
What do you enjoy most about coming to the centre?
Olena: "I really enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the chance to learn how to dance in the water. The staff are always kind and supportive, it makes a big difference."
Yuliia: "The people! The music! And okay - maybe that little feeling of accomplishment when I actually get the exercises right without accidentally whacking someone with a noodle! It’s such a joyful space where I feel seen, supported, and inspired to keep showing up."
Christina: "I really like our aqua-aerobics instructor! she makes every class interesting by changing up the exercises each time. And honestly, they’re not as easy as I first thought they’d be!"

Maryna: "Through these classes, I’ve made new friends, which has really helped ease the feeling of loneliness and made me feel more at home."
Christina: "Yes, I've made new friends and valuable connections!"
