SwimFit is a structured squad program designed for adult swimmers of all levels who want to build fitness, refine technique, and stay motivated in the water.
We recently chatted with Edmund Chu, a dedicated SwimFit squad member who recently took on the challenge of competing at the Masters World Championships. With a lifelong love of swimming, he continues to inspire others through his commitment, positivity, and passion for the sport.
Can you share your experience competing at the Masters World Championships?
Edmund: "In 2024, when Singapore (my home country) announced it would host the 2025 World Aquatic Masters, I started thinking about qualifying. I hadn’t raced in years and knew it would be a challenge, but I was excited to step out of my comfort zone.
It was my first World Championships, and the scale was inspiring - two Olympic-sized venues, thousands of competitors across all age groups, and an incredible number of staff and volunteers keeping everything running smoothly. It was tough, but also fun, and I’d definitely do it again."
What were your goals going into the competition, and how did you feel about your performance?
E: "My main goal was to qualify for my favourite events and beat my entry times. While I didn’t get personal bests, I came very close and even placed 15th overall in one of my races. I was satisfied with my performance and left with plenty of takeaways for future improvement."
How did you prepare for the event?
E: "For about 18 months, I trained five times a week in the gym (boxing, Pilates, HIIT) and swam with SwimFit squads once or twice weekly. In the final weeks, I shifted focus fully to swimming. I also cut down on alcohol, soft drinks, and late-night snacking to keep my training on track."
What did it mean to you to represent your club and country?
E: "It was an honour to represent Australia at Masters level. I competed under The Wett Ones club for registration purposes but trained with the Gunyama SwimFit squad."
Don’t be afraid to try. Swimming isn’t just about racing; it’s about the journey.
How has being part of our squad community impacted your motivation?
E: "Swimming can feel like a solo, repetitive sport, but joining a squad makes it fun and social. We motivate each other, share tips, and often get together outside the pool.
The City of Sydney coaches, Karen and Mark, have been instrumental in my journey. They’ve guided me with patience and dedication, and I’ve built a great connection with them - especially since my children also train with them in competitive squads."
What advice would you give to squad members considering setting competitive goals?
E: "Train consistently, eat healthily, take feedback on board and most importantly, enjoy the process."
How do you hope your journey encourages others in SwimFit?
E: "Don’t be afraid to try. Swimming isn’t just about racing; it’s about the journey."
What inspired you to compete at the Masters level, and what keeps you passionate?
E: "I’ve swum since childhood and competed through university before taking a long break. Years later, a friend encouraged me to race at a Masters event in Hong Kong, and I was inspired by the diversity of swimmers having fun and competing together.
That experience reignited my passion, and eventually led me to training for Worlds. I love the structure, the friendships, and the joy swimming continues to bring."
What’s next for you?
E: "Nothing planned yet, but I’ll keep training regularly and aim to compete in races from time to time."
