International Women’s Day (IWD) is on Saturday 8 March, with the theme, 'March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls', focusing on a gender-equal future.
It’s a day to honour women’s contributions and raise awareness on gender equality, reproductive rights, and other important women’s issues.
In celebration of IWD, we had the pleasure of speaking with our inspiring fitness instructor, Wendy. She shared how her passion for fitness ignited after moving to Australia over four decades ago and how she established herself in the fitness industry.
How does International Women's Day resonate with you personally and professionally, especially in the fitness world?
Wendy: I came to Australia 45 years ago alone, not speaking the language and with no job. I worked in a gold stamping factory and taught myself English by listening to Katrina Lee on Channel 10. I lived in a women’s boarding house where others helped me learn English. With this new skill, I gained the confidence to apply for a retail job. Although my English wasn’t perfect, the manager gave me a chance, and I worked in retail for over 10 years. In 1996, I took a leap and became a Fitness Supervisor and Group Trainer, later becoming a Personal Trainer. I’ve now been in the fitness industry for 30 years!
I'm also a proud mother of two daughters who have excelled in sports at National and World levels, graduated from university, and now work full-time. They inspire me and remind me to reflect on my own achievements that led me to where I am today.
How have you seen fitness positively impact and empower the women in your classes, beyond physical health?
W: My first job in fitness was at Leichhardt Park Aquatic Center, where I was the only female instructor. The fitness classes had many male participants, so it was challenging to encourage women to join my circuit classes, as they often felt they weren’t fit enough. Every day, I managed to get one woman to join, and I also invited them to lift weights with me. I started a running group and a power walking class for older or less confident women, which we did every Saturday morning. After each class, we'd grab lunch or coffee to build a supportive community. I created monthly challenges and encouraged some women to become instructors themselves!
Group classes are now led by women who inspire and encourage each other. These classes have become a social hub where they bond over family, work, and plans to meet up outside of workouts.

More women than ever are embracing fitness in different ways, from strength training to high-intensity workouts. Have you noticed a shift in how women engage with group fitness?
W: When I first started in the industry, there were almost no women in my classes or on the gym floor. Today, women confidently participate in every area of the gym. Group classes are now led by women who inspire and encourage each other. These classes have become a social hub where they bond over family, work, and plans to meet up outside of workouts. Group fitness classes have become a fun, supportive, and welcoming space for everyone.
...we can build a community where women feel comfortable, empowered, and welcomed, no matter where they are in their fitness journey.
What would you say to a woman feeling nervous about joining a group workout or trying a new class?
W: I encourage women to join my classes by being welcoming and supportive, so they don't feel intimidated by a new environment. I introduce them to others to help them feel comfortable and always tell them to give it a go, with no pressure to be at any level. Comparison is the thief of joy, so in my classes, we focus on personal progress, not comparison. I check in to ensure proper form, making sure everyone feels safe and confident. Group classes are a fun, social way to work out, and with time, progress will come.
How can gyms, studios, and instructors foster a more inclusive and supportive space for women year-round, beyond IWD?
W: We need to create an environment that supports the everyday woman, with programs that benefit her socially and mentally, while catering to all fitness levels. By encouraging and organising outings or extra events, we can build a community where women feel comfortable, empowered, and welcomed, no matter where they are in their fitness journey.
