Nick is one of our dedicated Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs), available at Gunyama Park.
We caught up with him to learn more about his journey into the field, what being an AEP involves, and what he loves most about helping others improve their health and wellbeing.
What led you to become an Exercise Physiologist (EP)?
Nick: "I was in the final year of my Bachelor’s in Sport and Exercise Science and still uncertain about my career path. That was until I took an exercise physiology class and was introduced to what an EP does, and I was immediately drawn to it. After completing my bachelor’s at UTS, I knew it was the right path for me, so I decided to enrol in a Master’s in Exercise Physiology."
For those who may not be familiar, can you explain what an EP does and how they help people?
N: "Exercise physiology is the utilisation of exercise as a substitute to traditional medication use, to treat medical conditions. We use evidence-based research to tailor exercise programs that consider all aspects of the client’s health and wellbeing."

Why would someone visit an EP?
N: "An EP can be beneficial for those managing chronic conditions, musculoskeletal injuries, or those looking to improve their overall health. Common conditions I typically work with include musculoskeletal issues such as lower back pain, as well as chronic conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis."
What's a typical day like for you?
N: "A typical day involves reviewing client cases, preparing exercise programs, and organising any necessary equipment for sessions. After each session, I record SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan) notes in the system to track progress and ensure consistency across visits. Then, it’s on to the next client!"
It’s rewarding to make a real difference in someone’s life while combining my love of exercise with a meaningful job.
What's one of the most rewarding experiences you've had with a client?
N: "I had a client who came in with severe knee pain and instability. They couldn’t perform lunges or squats due to the pain. Over several sessions, I helped the client rebuild strength in the knee joint, eventually allowing them to perform single-leg stands and dips. This increase in strength helped them return to more community activities like running, dancing, and just being more active in daily life."
What do you love most about being an EP?
N: "What I love most is building that connection with the client. It’s rewarding to make a real difference in someone’s life while combining my love of exercise with a meaningful job.”
