Daniel is one of our dedicated Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs), available at Cook + Phillip Park Pool and Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre.
We had a chat with him about how he got started in the field, what his day-to-day as an AEP looks like, and why helping others improve their health means so much to him.
What led you to become an Exercise Physiologist (EP)?
Daniel: "After more than 15 years in competitive sport, I’ve spent a lot of time around high performance and injuries. That experience drew me to become an AEP. I’ve always been passionate about sport, exercise, and fitness, and now I get to use that passion to help people feel better, move better, and perform at their best. Making a positive difference in people’s lives is what drives me."
For those who may not be familiar, can you explain what an EP does and how they help people?
D: "An EP is university-trained to assess and treat a wide range of conditions like injuries, chronic diseases, or disabilities - using evidence-based exercise programs. We apply our knowledge of anatomy and how the body responds to exercise to support recovery and improve health, which also allows us to work under compensable schemes."

Why would someone visit an EP?
D: "People see an EP for help with injuries, either to recover or work around them, while still reaching their health goals. We also support those managing chronic conditions like diabetes, heart or lung issues, weight concerns, mental health, cancer-related conditions, and disabilities, including through the NDIS.
What's a typical day like for you?
D: "I start my day with a gym session, then get ready for work. At work, I plan and prescribe treatment programs, see clients for their sessions, take notes, and write reports for GPs or stakeholders. I also respond to enquiries, stay updated on research, and build relationships with stakeholders. After work, I either train for soccer or relax and make dinner."
What's one of the most rewarding experiences you've had with a client?
D: "Successfully helping a client who suffered a brain injury to start to walk and jog again."
What do you love most about being an EP?
D: "I love helping people improve both physically and mentally, supporting them to become stronger, more independent, and achieve their goals."
