Neal, a recently retired high school teacher, has been visiting Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre since it first opened.

Neal: “I reckon it’s the best pool in the Inner West/CBD area. The centre is bright and airy, and the facilities - like the parking, changing rooms, and café -are fantastic. The water quality is great, and the lanes are never too busy!”

Although Neal lives further from Zetland, where Gunyama Park is located, he always makes time to visit.

N: “There are other pools that are closer to my home, but my car always seems to point in the direction of Gunyama when I want a swim.”

How has retirement impacted your swimming routine and overall wellbeing?

N: “When I was working, I had to squeeze in swims - at best, three times a week -either on my way to or from school or late on Sunday afternoons. It was enjoyable, but not always relaxing. The stress of lesson prep, marking, and dealing with students was always on my mind as I swam.

Retirement has changed all of that. Now I swim when it suits me. After each swim, I feel both physically and mentally recharged. My mind is clear, and I feel energised."

Neal, who has faced some health challenges, finds swimming to be the perfect form of exercise - gentle on his joints while still providing a solid workout.

How has swimming helped you?

N: “Swimming has become my exercise of choice as I’ve gotten older. Regular swimming builds my muscle strength and endurance, improving my cardiovascular health."

Looking ahead

Neal is excited to keep swimming at Gunyama, knowing it’s a fantastic way to stay fit.

N: “It’s the ideal exercise for staying healthy, and I love coming here regularly. It keeps me strong, both physically and mentally. That’s why it’s my happy place!”
